Call for Submissions - Edward Burtynsky Award

Exciting News - This award has grown into a NATIONAL award, now honouring educators (Teachers and Early Childhood Educators) across CANADA!

In the past, Natural Curiosity and the Dr. Eric Jackman Insititute of Child Study have honoured pre-service elementary school teachers for their excellence in Environmental Inquiry in Ontario. We are delighted to announce that we are now accepting applications from Early Childhood Educators across Canada for the Edward Burtynksy Award.

The Edward Burtynsky Award for Teaching Excellence in Environmental Education was established by the Laboratory School at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study. This award was made possible by the Norman and Marian Robertson Charitable Foundation, the generosity of anonymous donors, and world-renowned Environmentalist and Photographic Artist, Edward Burtynsky.

Who should apply?

Outstanding elementary educators (Teachers and Early Childhood Educators) across Canada who in their practice:

  • Use Environmental Inquiry,
  • Create learning opportunities that inspire students to become environmentally conscious and responsible world citizens,
  • Take sustainable action that protects and restores the environment

The first-prize winner will receive:

  • $500 towards Environmental Education related professional development
  • Signed Edward Burtynsky print
  • $1000 for his/her school towards funding Environmental Education learning experiences for students

Runner-Up (two recipients) will receive:

  • $250 toward Environmental Education related professional development
  • 2 signed books by Edward Burtynsky - one for themselves, and one for their school library

Submission Guidelines

Thank you to everyone who applied for this years awards. The award application deadline has passed for this year. Please sign up to our newsletter or Twitter feed to keep updated for the next award application period.

Please read the Submission Guidelines prior to completing and submitting the Information and Application Forms.

Who is eligible?
All nominees should be certified educators, which includes Teachers and Early Childhood Educators, who are currently teaching in an elementary school in Canada. No employee of the Laboratory School at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study, nor any affiliate of the Norman and Marian Robertson Charitable Foundation is eligible to receive this award.

What does a complete submission include?
A complete nomination consists of two components:

  1. a completed Information Form
  2. a written Application Form

When is the submission deadline?
Submissions must be made no later than April 30, 2017.

When will the winners be announced?
The grand prize winner and two-runners up will be contacted in late May 2017.

Who judges the submission?
Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges comprised of members of the Environmental Education Committee of the Laboratory School at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study.
